When Do You Know to Hire Movers?

Whether to Hire Movers or Do it Yourself

If you are getting ready to move, one of the final decisions you will have to make is between moving all of your belongings yourself, or hiring a moving company. Both options have their merits, which can make this decision even more difficult for some. At Coccia Real Estate, we want you to have an extremely smooth moving experience. This is why we have prepared some questions to ask yourself before deciding between a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) moving approach and hiring movers – so that you are able to make a stress-free and informed decision in this last stage of your move.

1. How far is your move?

Are you moving long-distance or simply to the next town over? This will make a huge difference between choosing whether or not to hire movers. A long distance move requires more thorough planning about what you will pack and how you will get all of your stuff to your end-destination. A long distance move is already pretty stressful, so in this scenario it is definitely worth considering hiring movers. The movers will deal with all aspects of transporting your valuables to your new home, rather than you personally trying to drive a big moving truck across state lines. On the other hand, if your new home is nearby it may make the most sense to handle the move on your own. When moving somewhere close by, a DIY approach to moving is much more realistic, as you can make multiple trips back-and-forth with ease.

2. What is your time-frame?

In other words, how much time do you have to make the actual move? Do you have to be out of your current location and into your new one within a day? Or, do you have a week or so to take your time moving your belongings from one location to the next? With a flexible moving timeframe, you can easily take your time moving your belongings on your own without having to hire movers. If your time frame is strict, you are going to want help to ensure the process is efficient. This may mean recruiting friends and family to help you, or hiring some extra help.

3. How big is your current location?

Are you moving from a cramped studio apartment, or something more like a 4-bedroom house? The location you are moving from is very telling of the kind of help you will need. If you simply need a bed and some boxes moved, you can probably handle the move on your own. However, if you have several pieces of large furniture and several rooms to move, hiring movers will make the process much faster and be less of a headache in the long run.

4. Do you have help?

Do you have a big group of friends and family who would drop everything to help you move? If so, then you can definitely recruit them for help as opposed to hiring movers. Unfortunately, many of us don’t have a ton of help readily available. This is where hiring a mover will make everything easier, and you won’t have to bribe your busy family and friends to help you with a move.

Moving Yourself

All in all, moving by yourself requires time and energy. It is, however, typically more cost effective than hiring help. If your move is relatively local and you have some people who can help you make a few trips (someone with a truck is always helpful!) then moving using the DIY approach is definitely a possibility. Just be sure to plan ahead so that you have the time you need to complete the process efficiently.

Hiring Movers

If you are short on time, help, or are moving long-distance – your best bet is most likely hiring movers. Movers will handle as little or as much as you need them to, from packing your belongings to transporting them to the right place. While movers will definitely cost you some money, they may be the right solution if time is of the essence. When hiring movers, make sure they are accredited and trustworthy based on past customer reviews.
